Oh, what a wonderful feeling...

It has been a while since my last post...mostly due to the fact that I had my in-laws visiting from India! My MIL was here of course, but later my FIL, BIL and SIL (and her bro) all arrived. So, to say that I was lacking time, would be an understatement :) It is fun though to have all of this family at home - but between trips to the mall, to NYC and the cruise, (oh, and a trip to NH for work), I've been more traveling than I had thought I ever would during my pregnancy! Thankfully, there have been no issues, but I do feel worn out from all the travel - and not to mention, my 'wonderful' lower back pain!

On June 17th, I went to Good Sam hospital for my very ultrasound for an Early Screen test (to test for Down Syndrome) that I opted for. Unless you've been through an experience like this, there is very little I can say to describe the feeling. It is amazing; my first thought was "whoa" - there is actually a little one with all these moving parts inside of me!!! Scary! But, within 10 secs, I became a ball of emotions...and started crying! It was so beautiful to see my little one! But the main reason we were there, of course, was for the test - and unfortunately, my baby was having fun looking directly at us (and it looked like he/she was slightly waving!) so therefore was not in the right position for the test. I tried walking around, going to the bathroom, singing Bollywood/Punjabi songs while lightly tapping my belly - but baby was completely stubborn and didn't want to move. After 30 minutes, we had to give up and re-schedule for another ultrasound.

On June 23rd, we went to Bethesda North for the follow-up ultrasound, keeping our fingers crossed that baby would cooperate; since this is an Early Screen, you can only test up until 13 weeks 6 days...and I believe at that point, I was 13 weeks 4 days - and since we were on our way to NJ/NYC for the weekend - and stopped at the hospital in between - this was the last day I could take this test (there is a Quad Screen you can take after 14 weeks, but considering they charged me for the last ultrasound as well, I wanted to ensure that this test went through to ease my apprehensions and make sure everything was OK with my little one!). This time, the baby was in the right position. Since the whole family was with me, my MIL, BIL, SIL all got to see baby...they were all so amazed by the ultrasound and seeing the movement!

We spent the weekend in NJ/NYC - it was fun, but I have to say, I cannot do the long drives any longer. My back was aching the entire trip...thankfully, I was called in to go to NH for work, so I took a flight from Atlantic City to NH and then back home...I was saved the return journey!

At that point, I was not showing - but yes, had gained weight so was feeling chubby all over. No one at work noticed that I was chubby, or even if they did, did not say anything - so def did not look "pregnant." Even now, at 17 weeks, I'm not "showing" - just looking chubby. I'd rather be showing though, at least people would know there is a reason why I'm gaining this weight ;)

On June 29th, on my way home from the NH office, heading to the hotel (it was a Tuesday and I was fasting - and hungry!) - I first felt a flutter :) I first thought it can't be possible to feel something so early...after all, I was only 14 weeks! So, I felt it TWICE...and dismissed it. But, the next day, I was speaking to Falak who told me that her bhabhi (Kashmira), who is about as far along as I am, also started to feel flutters in week 14, I knew what I felt was the same! I didn't feel the flutters again for a while, but now, at week 17 I feel them all the time - especially when I'm hungry!!! I think this is baby's way of saying "helloooo...I'm here...feed me!!!" lol. Saurabh still continues to rub my belly every night, wishing he could feel the baby too...but I'm sure the little one is comforted and feels snug by his touch :) Once, when Saurabh was in Atlanta and I was home - and I was really missing him! - as soon as I heard Saurabh's voice I felt flutters a couple of times. Looks like baby was missing daddy :)

Since I fast on Tuesdays - it's getting harder and harder to keep the fast, even though I'm allowed to have fruits, milk and one meal of halwa/kheer & poori. I'll be happy when the 21 fasts are complete, but have faithfully kept each one :) Aug 17th will be the completion date!

Interesting fact: the baby is now almost 6 inches, and weighs 4 ounces! WOW :) You're getting bigger every day, my sona!!!

At this point - I do still feel tired, but it's not as much as I usually used to feel. My back pain is unrelenting, and I'm in desperate need of a massage! Also, while on the cruise, not sure what happened but it feels like I pulled a muscle or a nerve is acting up on my upper-inside thigh. It hurts every time I try to stretch my leg (especially while sleeping) and def cannot sit cross legged since I can't bend it! I guess all these aches and pains are a normal part of pregnancy - I'm still happy that my pregnancy has been fairly smooth, aside from these small bumps.
Update: I read up on the pain I've been feeling, and it turns out that it may be "sciatic nerve" pain, which occurs commonly during the pregnancy. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, to the back of the legs/feet. You can read more on this at: Sciatic Nerve Pain

My next appointment is on July 31st - and I will be 19 weeks at that point :) I can't wait to schedule my ultrasound in which I'll find out whether baby is a he or a she!!!! :) I'm so excited!

Love you, my little one! I'm counting the days until I can hold you in my arms and kiss you!!!

It's Music to my Ears

I had my 2nd Dr's appointment on Saturday, June 5th.

This time, I heard the rhythmic - and fast- thumping of my little one's heart. What a beautiful sound :) His/Her heart was beating between 165/170 bpm! Can you imagine something that is [now] only the size of my palm - about 1.6 inches long - has a heart that beats so fast? Amazing!!! I wish I had recorded the sound, because I'm longing to hear it again...next time :)

Saurabh, my MIL and I went to the doctor's office. As usual, the nurse took my weight/asked some normal questions and sent me to the examination room to meet the doc. The doc then rubbed some jelly on my belly...and used a Doppler device to track down the heartbeat. It was scary at first (and she had already warned me) because it took her a couple of minutes to find it. It was on the lower right side, kind of near my pelvic bone. Once we heard the "music," we all could not stop smiling!!!!

This was the day I was waiting for...for more reasons than one. I wanted to not only get the assurance that everything is A-OK...but once I heard the heartbeat, I had decided I would tell the rest of my family/friends about our little one.

Ayesha already knew, since she had come to take care of me in NH just a few days prior (I was in NH for work)...and I told Falak & Mansi later that day. The list of calls continued to everyone in India (Saurabh's family)...aunts/uncles...and then later to my family. The reactions ranged from surprise (since it had been a long 6-year wait to hear this news!) to happiness...received words of love, and words of advice (Shelly bhaiya warned me not to eat too much...and especially not too much ghee!!!). It's wonderful sharing the news with all my loved ones. And...it was VERY hard to keep it from them for so long!

My friend Deepti is moving away to Chicago, so on Saturday night we had a farewell party for her - I announced it to our Cincy group then...and everyone else that was remaining, I told them at Rahul's birthday party the following evening. What was funny, is that Pallavi was sitting next to me and apologizing for not being able to attend a Girl's Movie Night that I had planned a couple of weeks ago. She looked sick (ok, that's not the funny part)...so I told her, it's totally ok - I can tell you haven't been feeling well. As I said that, she relayed the news that she is expecting! And my response: ME TOO!!!! :-) But, it's interesting to see, that although she's a month ahead of me, how different our pregnancies are. Goes to show - everyone is different, and every pregnancy is different.

But now, I'm 11 weeks...and have almost completed my First Trimester...woohoo! :)

I'm still feeling very tired these days, and do have the occasional bouts of feeling nauseated. But, all in all, it's not too bad. I have very vivid, strange dreams these days! My tummy has definitely gotten chubbier, but I'm not "showing" as of yet. I don't really like sleeping on my back - I prefer sleeping on my left side. Other than that, not too many other "symptoms" - but I'm looking forward to getting some energy back, whenever that happens :)

I really can't wait to hold you, love you, hug you and kiss you - MY little one! :) Love you!

1st Doc Appt - What to Expect

Hello, World.

I know when I found out I was pregnant - I was anxious to see the doctor. Something about hearing it from a 'professional' makes it really set in that it's "real." (Of course, your missed period and 3 pregnancy tests confirm it, but trust me when I say that it becomes even more real when the doc tells you so!).

I thought the visit would go like this:
I'd go to the doc with my hubby. I'd be sitting on the "bed," with hubby holding my hand next to me. The doc would bring in this machine, rub some type of gel on my tummy that would feel cold and uncomfortable, and bring up a visual...showing me that there is something actually in there! I thought, at the very minimum, the doc would do a blood test. Measure my HCG levels. Call me in again to see if they've doubled and everything is normal.....

Was I wrong!!

My first doctor's visit was at 6 weeks.
I walked in, they checked my weight...had me POS and confirmed my pregnancy. Ok, that wasn't what I expected. What about the heartbeat? What about the visual? I already knew that the stick would change color and give a positive! Duh!
The nurse then lead me to the gyno's examining room, where my doc did a regular Pap Smear - and I totally hate those. After she had completed, she said my hubby and I can meet her in her office. She gave me a bunch of paperwork, regarding the doctor's fees, the different types of tests which can be performed and when, etc. She asked if we had any questions (umm, you think?!), congratulated us, and sent us on our way.

I definitely felt kind of frustrated. I was expecting so much more! So, at this point, all I had were very light cramps. No other symptom. Oh, and a positive pregnancy test. I didn't "feel" pregnant. I wanted proof that there was something was growing in there. Tough luck! I'll have to wait til my 2nd appointment (which is usually at 11 or 12 weeks). Even then, my doc will use the Doppler instrument and let us listen to the baby's heartbeat. No visual! I believe when I get some of the tests that I've opted for, performed, that is when I'll get the first ultrasound, after which the next ultrasound will probably be at 5 months. After some researching, I found out, that in normal pregnancies - that is the total amount of visuals you get from the doc! Boo!

Anyway, at this point I do "feel" pregnant with my occasional nausea, feeling of chubbiness around my tummy, and cheese cravings. But, if you don't have a high risk pregnancy, you can rest assured that you're doc isn't going to do anything but perform a normal POS pregnancy test. ;)

I'm really looking forward to 6/4 - when I get to hear the heartbeat and when I get to tell all my family and friends officially :)

Ciao for now!

Month 2

This month was definitely filled with many more symptoms than the previous month!

Week 5 & 6:

I started getting slight cramps - which completely scared me, needless to say. They were very light (lighter than PMS cramps), but still did keep me restless. The doctor said it was perfectly normal, as long as there was no blood associated, or the cramps weren't painful...both of which were not in the picture. So far, so good! The only other symptom I had was my frequent trips to bathroom...and it wasn't because I was drinking too much water! I had to go literally every 20 minutes...and even wake up in the middle of the night twice. Fun stuff.

Week 7 & 8:

Still had the frequent urination. Felt bloated and chubby - felt much of that during this timeframe. The cramps were now just very rare occurances. But, I did go on a cruise...and it did seem like every thing I was eating was now STICKING to me. So, I did feel and look chubbier already! I vowed to begin walking as soon as I got back, which I did - and it worked wonders. I ended up losing some of that extra weight, which made me feel much better! Other than that - the nausea did kick in. I'm thankful it isn't too bad though. I do occasionally get the nauseated feeling, but don't actually vomit...most of the time. There have only been 3-4 times that I think I've actually vomitted. But, it really isn't bad at all. The nausea feeling is actually good - let's you know everything is normal, and I think it occurs because of the fluctuation of the hormones. So, I do have the feeling, but thankfully I'm not spending 80% of my time in the bathroom! ;) Physical changes - my breasts have gotten heavier and aerolas bigger. Even though I lost 5lbs of that "extra" weight, I can still feel a little chubbiness around my tummy.

I've started trying to go on walks every other day. I walk for about 2 hours - from my house to the front of my complex, at a normal speed (while talking on the phone and catching up with friends/family). The walks and fresh air def do help me to not feel as bloated!

Diet: I'm trying to keep total control of my diet. The cruise had me eating a lot of things which were really fattening, but it's all in control now! I'm eating "normally"...and do give in sometimes to some 'cravings.' I don't know, actually, if I would call it cravings, but there are times that I really feel like eating something in particular. For example, one day I felt like eating a Bean Burrito from Taco Bell (with lots of gooey cheese!), and another day I felt like eating Breadsticks with cheese from Pizza Hut! Yup, cheese is on my fav list...as is chicken. I'm not really craving any sweets, which is strange because usually I love sweets/chocolate! I have always loved spicy food, and continue to love it now :) My MIL also came within this timeframe, and is here making yummy food - from Punjabi Kadi to Paranthas! My baby has it made :) I'm trying to eat home-cooked food everyday, besides the weekend, as I usually do...so that I can continue to keep my weight in check!

That sums up the 2nd Month. I've now started Week 9, so I will try to keeping this updated in "real time" so that I do not forget any of the nitty-gritty details!

For now, I'm going to try and stay healthy & happy above all! :)

Month 1

I'm on a roll today, in terms of writing these posts :)

I used the Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor to conceive - and also charted my temperature. The temp thing didn't work too well for me, since I didn't really see a "peak" - but it did help determine if I was pregnant :) We tried on the High and Peak days as per the monitor and voila, I got a positive in Month 1 :) I was hesitant to spend so much on this monitor, but after reading all of the great reviews from those who had conceived within the first 3 months of using the monitor, I thought there is no better investment than this if you're ready - which I was. And I was right! I'm so glad I got the monitor (which was suggested by my friend, Sheena).

Let me try and recap what I felt during Month 1.

I found out on Friday, 4/16 that I'm pregnant :) Before even taking the pregnancy test, I "knew" I was pregnant. I took my temperature that morning, and it was elevated beyond my normal temperature (which is a sign of pregnancy!). And...I just "felt" like something was different. I promised myself, though, that I would not take a pregnancy test until Monday. But, that promise didn't really hold through...(no patience whatsoever!). It was day 26 of my cycle (and I usually have a 24 day cycle).

I took the test that afternoon, after I couldn't take it any longer and just wanted to know! :) I POS, went back to my laptop...and remained patient for 5 mins ;) A part of me was thinking not to get so optimistic; after all, it was only the first month we had really "tried." However, when I went back into the bathroom, I was pleasantly surprised to see a BFP!!! (Big Fat Positive!). Hubby (S) was the first person I called, of course, and I literally cried tears of joy :) He was ecstatic as well. Below is a snapshot I took of the Positive Pregnancy Test - yes, I wanted to remember it!!! After all, I had been waiting for this day! ;)

I called Anu & Mansi after that...just to "try out" how it would feel telling everyone. Jokingly, I said I was pregnant. Mansi believed me, and was very happy (and shocked!)...as was Anu. I told Mansi it was just an April fools joke...and she bought it ;) Anu, however, did not! So of course, after she made me swear, I had to tell her it was actually the truth...so that is how Anu was the first to know :) The next to know was my MIL - she asked me if I was pregnant, and I said no...and then she said that if I am, and lied, that it won't be good...so I had to tell her the truth ;) Little did I know that the rest of the family would find out soon thereafter! Good news travels fast :) But, my plan was to tell the rest of the family later into my pregnancy since it was too soon at that moment and of course...you do get a little scared after hearing all the horror stories!

From my friends, Pooja was the first to know. I spoke to her daily about what I was feeling, and what "fun" I had to look forward to ;) Of course, she had the perfect pregnancy, so I was prepared to take things she said with that in mind...since I had the feeling that I would probably be the complete opposite!!!

Symptoms - again, everyone and every pregnancy is different. But, I honestly didn't feel anything. My aereolas did become bigger towards the end of the 4th week, but that is about all I felt. No other symptoms yet, but of course...it was still way too early! :)

That pretty much sums up everything that occurred during the first Month!

Woohoo - Baby is on the way!!! YAY!

My Best Friends

I definitely need to have a seperate post for my best friends, Falak and Ayesha. This is to you both!

I'm telling you the big news via this post: You both are going to be Massis :) You can go back and read my other posts to catch up...but I thought I should have something especially for you both to give you the news and to apologize...for not being able to share it sooner!

First off, Sorry!!!! I know both of you are going to be very mad that you're finding out much later into my pregnancy, but I had forewarned you of my 'superstitious beliefs' in advance :) You know I love you both!!! Seriously, I loved the way you both "guessed" and kept saying I'm pregnant, and that I'm hiding it. I wish I could've admitted it...but you both were right :)

Ayesha - HA! Now you know why I had gotten chubbier ;) No, I was not just becoming FAT. I had a reason! LOL...so I guess you can't officially tease me. Although, with the way you were grilling me and questioning me, it was VERY hard not to tell you!

Falak - Now you know why I was so persistent in giving you my tips and telling you they actually work :) I got pregnant the very first month I started 'trying' those things :) So, I hope that encourages you as well now!

You guys can now go back to my original post - "The Beginning" and read through it. Or, you can now IM me and yell at me for not telling you sooner ;)

Either way, be sure to leave a post so baby knows he/she is loved by both my best friends!

Love you guys...

...and love you my little one :)

Baby - Introducing Your Family!

This post is to my baby...to let him/her know about their loving family and all of the excitement going on in the "background" to prepare for his/her birth!
Daddy:
Since you already know what Mommy is feeling from the previous posts, let me tell you about your Daddy. To say that he is on top of this world, would be an understatement. He loves kids. So, when he found out that you're on the way, he was happy and excited from Day 1! We even have some names short-listed. He doesn't care whether you are a boy or a girl - because the only thing he wanted was a little one of his own to love, cuddle and play with. Your Daddy is looking forward to having someone play video games with him, to spoil with all the latest toys and gadgets, someone to hug him and kiss him and someone he can love to no end! Every night, when we lay in bed, regardless of whether I'm awake or sleeping - your Daddy rubs your home (my tummy) and says this is his way of loving you before you enter this world, so I can't complain! He started doing this when you were the size of a letter on this post, so you can only imagine how much he will love you once you are in this world. :) Your Daddy will always have a soft spot for you no matter what - and if you're old enough to read this, make sure you go and give your Daddy a hug right away! :)

Naani & Daadi
So, little one, you should know...that your Naani & Daadi love you very much! They both have been waiting...and sometimes, not patiently, for this day!!! Haha :) Yes, after 6 years, their prayers were answered and news that you were going to be their grandchild was delivered to them both. Both of them were so excited! Your Naani literally screamed (and proceeded to share the news with your Naanu), and your Daadi booked a ticket the next day to come and take care of me (and feed you!) lol. Your Daadi is literally making me eat "AMLA KA MURABBA" (it is TOO sweet, and doesn't taste good) EVERYDAY! She is also making you yummy meals...sometimes before I can even think of what I feel like eating, she knows...so it seems like you two have a connection already! Your naani calls me to lecture me on the do's and don'ts, and most importantly to remind me to stay happy so that you are happy, too :) She is also always asking me what I would like to eat! You are blessed, little one, to have such loving grandmothers :)

Naanu & Daadu
Both your grandfathers are very down-to-earth, but both are geuninely excited and awaiting your arrival! Your naanu was in shock to hear that you're on your way :) Your daadu was a little more reserved, but happy just the same!!! Although both your grandfathers aren't as expressive right now, I can guarantee, they will be the ones to spoil you to no end...even more so than your grandmoms :)

Massi
Your Anu massi was the first to know about you!!! And needless to say, she is constantly asking me about you..."Howz chota doing?" hehe. She has nicknamed you "chota" meaning "little one." She is the one that will be throwing your baby shower (along with your Naani & Mansi Massi!) and is so excited to plan for everything around you. :) She is excited to be a "real" massi, and ready to play with you already!!! She was even planning on taking off from work to take care of me (before she knew that your Daadi will be here). She kept a 'chaliya' during which she also prayed for you to be here...and then once she found out that you're on your way, she prayed for your well-being everyday that she went to the Gurudwara. See how much your Massi loves you! :)
Mansi Massi is also very close to your mommy. Mommy spends almost every day talking about you, her thoughts, her feelings to Mansi Massi...on chat...while working ;-) Mansi Massi is really looking forward to your arrival - so much so, that on many days, she is feeling my pregnancy symptoms ;) That's called "sympathy" symptoms...goes to show how close we are!!! :)

Chachu and Chachi
Varun Chachu and Vani Chachi were among the first to know as well...and the news was shared by your Daadi to them, since she couldn't contain her excitement :) They just called me as well to share their happiness and excitement! Your chachu has always wanted to come to the US during Winter to see the snowfall, so you've given him the perfect excuse! Your chachi has already spoiled your mom with the latest kurtis (in maternity wear sizes!) so your mom can look all trendy while you're in her tummy :) Your Vani chachi has also kept a 'chaliya,' going to the Gurudwara and Mandir to pray for your well-being and good health.

Baby, you are blessed to have each one of these members of your family. Just remember, no matter what, each one of these family members will always remain by your side and will love you for who you are! Always try to make everyone in your family proud, because you mean the world to each one of us! :)
